If You Take Supplements and/or Medications, Be Sure to Never Mix These Combos

Most of the time, taking supplements is recommended. Most Americans don’t get enough vitamins and minerals from their diets, and for others, supplements can alleviate or prevent certain health concerns. Yet, in several cases, mixing supplements and/or medications can be dangerous, or even deadly. Take note of these harmful interactions, and be sure to avoid taking them with each other.

Fish Oil and Gingko Biloba

Fish oil supplements have omega-3s, which can tame inflammation and boost mood. Yet, when you take them with supplements that thin the blood, like ginkgo Biloba or garlic, you could inadvertently prevent blood clotting. This can lead to uncontrolled bleeding. Prevent harmful interactions by taking the supplements at least two hours apart.

St. John’s Wort and Antidepressants

If you take antidepressants, never mix them with St. John’s Wort. The supplement can cause fever, confusion, and anxiety if taken alongside another antidepressant. This is because both drugs increase levels of serotonin, which can be harmful if your serotonin levels are too high. This is known as serotonin syndrome, which can lead to muscle rigidity and seizures in severe cases.

Garlic and OTC or Rx Blood Thinners

Garlic supplements are said to combat oxidative stress and help relieve high blood pressure. Garlic also thins out your blood, which is why it’s risky to take garlic alongside blood thinners, whether it’s baby aspirin or Coumadin. Other offenders are ginkgo Biloba, fish oil, ginger, feverfew, vitamin E, and white willow bark. All of these can lead to uncontrollable bleeding after a fall or injury.
